Going where the music takes you

The four members of Just Us had a chance meeting on the South African musical streets 40 years ago. They were playing with renowned local and international bands for over three decades — that experience culminated into this gem, Just Us, a newly formed East London band.

The four-piece band is made up of seasoned artists in lead singer Lucky Moremi (64), Bass Guitarist Sithembiso Mxokiswa (67), Zinikele Mrwarwada (18) on Keyboard and Robbie Moema (62) on Drums. Starting their their professional music careers as teenagers in their respective provinces; they have played with bands across genres.

Just Us floats seamlessly across a medley of all music genres, from Jazz, Rock 'n roll, Mbaaqanga (Maskandi), Rhythm and Blues, Fusion and Reggae. After an illustrious career in southern Africa, they found a home in East London.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, the band's lead singer, Lucky Moremi started playing music aged 16 as a drummer and vocalist. Within a year he went professional and earned R400 per song recorded. He has since played with and opened for great musicians such the late Bra Hugh Masekela (a female trio of Felicia Marion, Thato Nkosi, and Anneline Malebho), Jacob Mphararanya Radebe, Maria Louw, Abigail Kubheka, Sona Milas (England), Fortune.

He has played in London and Swaziland.

Moema, they scored a lucrative contract to play for Sun International in his teens. A Sun contract for musicians in the 70s and 80s was the ultimate kick start to success and security (a good income). He has opened for Joan Armatrading during her concert in Swaziland. He was scouted by the band while playing drums for Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Pat Shange and Chicco Twala. You could say the road to Just Us began in Swaziland — a band they had all been playing for was chosen for the grand opening of the Mdantsane Sun Hotel under the new owner, tycoon Sol Kerzner. They stayed for a full year and fell in love with Mdantsane.

"We came to play in East London in 1989 and never left."

Fellow musician, keyboardist Zinikele Mrwarwada not only relocated from Colesberg to East London; he also found a wife in 1996 and has grown children. After a chance meeting in East London, Moremi and Moema joined Savana in 1994.

One member of the band who is born and raised in Mdantsane, Sithembiso Mxokiswa speaks highly of his fellow musicians. Re united and playing with these experienced musicians, he says, reminds him of his days as a member of Stompie Mavi's band in the 80s.

"We have come far with these gentlemen. We get along very well, rehearsals are fun and we are making money together. We love music. We respect it. We love and respect one another."
